Tips to Reduce Sleep Movement at Night

To better grasp how to reduce movement during sleep, it is essential to understand why people move in the first place. Sleep movement can be attributed to a variety of factors, ranging from physiological to environmental. Sleep is a dynamic state, composed of multiple cycles. Each cycle includes stages of light and deep sleep, as well as Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Movement is more likely to occur during lighter stages of sleep and transitions between cycles. During REM sleep, when dreaming is most vivid, the body naturally experiences temporary paralysis—a phenomenon known as REM atonia—to prevent the acting out of dreams. However, not all movement can be explained by these natural processes. The intricacies of sleep cycles reveal why movements are often involuntary. During non-REM sleep, the body undergoes various restorative processes. In contrast, REM sleep is a period characterized by increased brain activity, similar to wakefulness, which can sometimes lead to movements if the REM atonia is incomplete. Understanding these stages helps in identifying when and why movements occur.
