Adderall: targeting ADHD

Adderall is a medication that combines two central nervous system stimulants: amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It is a stimulant frequently used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It’s also approved by the U.S. FDA to treat the sleep disorder narcolepsy.

How it works:

Adderall works by enhancing the effects of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine, and norepinephrine. “They help increase a person’s ability to focus and enhance memory and executive function.” (SingleCare).

What it can do:

  • Studies suggest that Adderall may help adults with treatment-resistant depression. These include individuals who have not responded to other treatment strategies or are experiencing hypersomnia, fatigue, or impaired concentration (UpToDate).
  • Caution: Adderall may be habit-forming and is associated with a risk of substance abuse. It is essential to inform the prescribing doctor of any history of substance abuse before using Adderall.
