Aniracetam: a holistic nootropic supplement to improve mood and memory
Aniracetam is used as a nootropic supplement aimed at enhancing mood and memory, although studies on its safety and effectiveness are limited. While the FDA has not approved aniracetam as a pharmaceutical, the European Health Authority (EMA) has listed it as an authorized medical product. Nevertheless, it has been removed from the market in Japan pending further research. Anecdotally, aniracetam is associated with fostering “collective and holistic thinking” or “putting the pieces of the puzzle together.”
How it works:
Aniracetam may potentially exert positive effects on some brain receptors or binding sites, including AMPA-sensitive glutamate receptors. Additionally, it is thought to increase blood flow and activity in the association cortex area of the brain. Aniracetam may also affect various brain chemicals, such as the uplifting neurotransmitters acetylcholine, serotonin, and dopamine.
What it can do:
- One clinical trial found that aniracetam helps benefit memory, while a separate study suggested that aniracetam improves mood in people with memory problems.
- In another review, aniracetam demonstrated stimulating effects, leading researchers to propose that aniracetam may help children with ADHD.
- Healthcare providers in Japan used to prescribe aniracetam for anxiety, agitation, or depression before its removal from the market due to insufficient study.
Are there nootropics that blend natural and synthetic? Could they be the ultimate brain boosters?
