Noopept: a cognitive enhancer from Russian laboratories
Noopept is a pharmaceutical first synthesized in Russia, derived from the molecular structure of piracetam. Noopept is considered a nootropic based on preliminary evidence suggesting that it has neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing properties.
How it works:
While Noopept’s mechanism of action is not fully understood, it is believed to potentially increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that enhances neurotransmission and neural connections in the brain. “Noopept may also activate or modulate neurotransmitter receptors involved in learning and cognitive function, including certain glutamatergic and cholinergic receptors” (Examine).
What it can do:
- A study conducted among humans found that Noopept supplements improved cognitive function in a small group of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) following a stroke. These findings, however, have not yet been independently replicated.
- Reported side effects of Noopept include irritability, sleep disturbances, and increased blood pressure; it may also cause headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, and impaired memory.
